Using Multimedia:  Getting the Most out of Video

From film projectors to laser discs, videotapes to DVDs, film in the classroom is not new. But today, with video easily accessible on almost any device, teachers are increasingly relying on it for learning purposes. Yet using video effectively in the classroom isn’t as simple as just pressing the play button. Too often students zone out and become passive viewers, getting much less out of the experience than they could. Fortunately, a few simple steps can help you prime your students to be active, engaged viewers.

AASL School Library Month Snapshot Project

APRIL- SCHOOL LIBRARY MONTH

The School Library Month snapshot project is critical to the work AASL AND ALA is doing at the national level to engage in the new ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) and advocate for school libraries at the national level. We need participation and engagement in this project from school libraries and school library advocates from all over the country, as well as sharing back with us the completed graphic. 

  • Even if you have already done so, please reshare (or adapt and rewrite) the announcement the AASL Office posted on on April 5 about engaging in the School Library Month snapshot project (it is the message to which this comment has been added).
  • Repost (or write your own) information to all state and regional lists, send out on your Twitter, Facebook and other social media accounts an invitation to become engaged in #slm16 - there are a variety of ways to get engaged - check out the website for a wealth of engagement ideas and resources http://www.ala.org/aasl/slm 
  • Send a personal request all of the local leadership in your Affiliate region to share, repost, and encourage engagement in #slm16, but most especially in the snapshot project
  • You, as a leader and a model for your constituents are encouraged to complete the snapshot project, then share it with AASL/ALA as well as tweet it out (if you are on Twitter) using the hashtags #slm16 and #ShowUsYourLibrary

National Library Legislative Day 2016

As part of National Library Legislative Day 2016 (NLLD), we are offering library advocates unable to attend in person the chance to participate through Virtual Library Legislative Day (VLLD)!

This year, we’re teaming up with the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) to help expand our efforts and take advantage of the momentum started by the nearly 400 library supporters who plan to attend NLLD. Their Chapters’ members are pledging their time to make calls, send emails, tweet, and otherwise raise awareness about library issues during the week of May 2nd. To date, the HPA has received pledges for nearly 500 actions from their members!

We think we can do our wizarding friends even better.

Over the next few weeks, please take a second to register and then ask everyone in your circles -- members, followers, patrons, fellow library staffers, and listservs -- to join us! We’ll follow up by sending out talking points and other handy resources you can use to advocate easily and effectively. We’ll also be including a link to a webstream of the National Library Legislative day program, live from Washington, on the morning of May 2nd. You'll get to hear our keynote speaker, former Congressman Rush Holt, and listen in on this year’s issue briefing.

There’s also a handy resource toolkit, put together by the Harry Potter Alliance, for librarians who may want to get younger advocates involved. You can also find out more by visiting the United for Libraries and the Harry Potter Alliance webpages, or by subscribing to the Action Center.
