The Institute for Holocaust Education is excited to announce the 16th annual Tribute to the Rescuers Essay Contest for high school students in Nebraska and western Iowa!

The Essay Contest is an excellent multi-disciplinary assignment for your student or classroom. It naturally fits into many high school subjects, including English, social studies/history, Holocaust literature, reading, research, and writing. The contest is offered to students in two categories – 9 & 10th grades and 11 & 12th grades with cash prizes ranging from $75 to $800 in each category.
The Essay Contest asks students to:

  • choose an individual or group who took a stand against social injustice and exhibited moral courage
  • explore the historical events surrounding their chosen topic
  • write an essay exploring their topic and how it relates to the Holocaust
  • use the lens of the Holocaust to analyze moral behavior and educates them about contemporary issues
  • most importantly, each student delves into the true meaning of moral courage and discovers how the topic impacts him/her on a very personal level.
