Secrets to Motivating Students

Immersions About Place

African Immigrants and Refugees
Exploring community by physically traveling to neighborhoods and hearing directly from people from those communities allows you to learn firsthand the untold richness of where students reside. Combining an Immersion experience with a Reflection night, you will leave with a new perspective of the culture and a vivid personal context for incorporating relevant stories and lessons into curriculum.

This Immersion About Place cohort focuses only on African Immigrants and Refugees, and includes both an Immersion day and an evening Reflection night.

Innocent Classroom 1

IC 1 Alexs This first course is designed to guide you through a transformative experience in how you see and interact with students. Through conversations, real-world examples, and collaborative problem-solving, you will gain a shared language and learn practical strategies for building relationships with every child.

Innocent Classroom 1 : Participants will attend the Immersion Day and either the Tuesday or Wednesday cohort sessions, for a total of 6 sessions.

Attendance is required at the Immersion in order to continue with the cohort.

Essay Contest

Dear Educator,
The Institute for Holocaust Education (IHE) is excited to announce the 17th annual Tribute to the Rescuers Essay Contest for high school students in Nebraska and western Iowa. We had close to 400 students participate last year and would love to have even more this year. We had entire classes participate, as well as individuals. This is a great opportunity for students to engage with, process, and hopefully apply the lessons of those who exemplify moral courage.
The Essay Contest is an excellent multi-disciplinary assignment. The contest gives students the opportunity to participate in a regional contest, with the possibility to win a cash prize and be honored for their talents. It naturally fits into many high school subjects, including English, social studies/history, Holocaust literature, reading, research, and writing. The contest is offered to students in two categories – 9 & 10th grades and 11 & 12th grades with cash prizes ranging from $75 to $800 in each category!
The Essay Contest asks students to:
  • choose an individual or group who took a stand against social injustice and exhibited moral courage
  • explore the historical events surrounding their chosen topic
  • write an essay exploring their topic and how it relates to the Holocaust
  • use the lens of the Holocaust to analyze moral behavior and educate them about contemporary issues
  •  most importantly, each student delves into the true meaning of moral courage and discovers how the topic impacts him/her on a very personal level.
